Comments for 1900?? Road Grader

  • Oh Boy, there were hundreds of companies that made road graders in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries so figuring out who made this one would be hard to do. You might try the Historical Construction Equipment Association (HCEA) website, but unfortunately, it is overly complicated and therefore seldom visited... As to the original colour, you might find a bit of paint behind a bolt, or where to pieces of metal overlap, if youre lucky. One thing for sure, it is a very early grader as they soon realized that wooden wheels weren't up to the stress and sideloads that a grader encountered when moving dirt and the industry quickly changed over to steel wheels. Why the rears have tread is a mystery, unless there was a gear running off the rear axle that would have went to an elevating attachment (to load the dirt scraped up by the blade onto a conveyer and up into a dump wagon)??
